Naomi Campbell is CFDA’s new fashion icon

Every year, the international fashion community honors the best and brightest in American design at the CFDA Fashion Awards.

Since its founding in 1981, this has been the highest honor in American fashion, that recognizes the outstanding contributions in womenswear, menswear, accessories and emerging talent, as well as journalism, creative vision, personal style, positive change, and lifetime achievement.

Naomi Campbell will receive the prestigious Fashion Icon Award at the CFDA’s ceremony on June 4. The list of previous recipients includes Iman, Lady Gaga, Johnny Depp, Rihanna, Pharrell Williams, Beyoncé and Franca Sozzani.

Naomi Campbell 2018

Naomi needs no introduction. Over the years, one ofthe greatest supermodels of all times served as a muse to many designers, including Gianni Versace and Azzedine Alaïa. In her decades-spanning career, she established herself as one of the most recognizable faces in the industry. She graced the covers of more than 500 magazines and was featured in a long list of campaigns, including Burberry, Versace, Moschino, Prada, Chanel, Dolce & Gabbana, Marc Jacobs, Louis Vuitton, Yves Saint Laurent and Valentino. Campbell is also the first black model to appear on the cover of TIME magazine, French Vogue and Russian Vogue. Undeniably, she’s an icon, and CFDA decided to make her far-reaching influence officially recognized.

“It is truly an honor to be recognized by the CFDA with this year’s Fashion Icon award,” Campbell said. “Being from London, my personal style has always been tremendously influenced by both the dynamic, ever-changing nature of street culture and the music scene. I grew up in this industry and I’m forever grateful to the iconic American fashion designers that have supported me and celebrated me throughout my career.”

Also among the nominees for CFDA Awards in both womenswear and menswear is the multi-talented founder of Off-White and newest artistic director of Louis Vuitton, Virgil Abloh. Plus, Donatella Versace, who spent this year honoring the legacy of her late brother, will receive the International Award. Head to CFDA for the full list of nominees.

There is no much to add to the statement of CDFA’s Chairwoman Diane von Furstenberg: “From enfant prodige to Goddess of Fashion, Naomi represents beauty, activism and joie de vivre.”

We couldn’t agree more. Cogratulations, Naomi!
