Passionate about her philanthropic endeavors, the global super star has been helping the homeless, sick children and the unemployed through her charitable organization BeyGOOD since 2013.
This time, Beyoncé has teamed up with UNICEF and Gucci’s philanthropic arm CHIME FOR CHANGE in a mission to bring safe water to the most vulnerable women and children in Burundi.
The “Heart of Africa” is one of the most densely populated countries in Africa with nearly half of the population lacking access to clean, safe drinking water.
“More than 50% of Burundi’s population is under the age of 18, and life expectancy in the country is currently 43 years old, one of the lowest levels in the world, largely because illnesses from contaminated water affect so many young people”, UNICEF notes.
The burden of fetching water more often than not falls on women and children, mostly on girls, who often miss out on school and other opportunities, which can set them up for an early marriage, poverty, domestic violence, and other harms. Changing this dynamic is main focus of Beyoncé’s latest project.
Since the launch in 2017, BEYGOOD4BURUNDI initiative helped with construction of 35 wells for the people of Burundi to utilize safe water. Moreover, Gucci’s one million dollar commitment to the project will help support UNICEF’s goal to build 80 more and give the access to clean water to more than 120,000 people.
“Today young girls in the ‘Heart of Africa’ are given the gift of hope for a brighter tomorrow through our multi-year partnership with UNICEF and commitment to support safe water access solutions,” Beyoncé said.
But, BEYGOOD4BURUNDI doesn’t stop here: the goal is to bring clean water to 366,000 girls and women in Burundi by 2020, and you can join them on this journey.
